Apple and Google have acknowledged that Gemini's models enable the latest iteration of Siri and other generative AI capabilities. CNBC reported the news, but Apple and Google quickly responded with a lengthy joint statement. Here's some of it: "Apple chose Google's Al technology as the best base for its base Models..." Apple Intelligence will continue to operate on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute while adhering to Apple's industry-leading privacy standards."
In June, it was rumored that Apple was considering working with OpenAI and Anthropic on Siri. Two months later, Google emerged as a competitor. Another story stated that Apple would use a modified version of Gemini to develop the new Siri, for which it would pay Google roughly $1 billion per year. However, no formal agreement numbers were provided.
It is also worth noting that recent iPhones provide direct access to OpenAI's ChatGPT. But how long?
